Peak season is exciting. The orders arrive, the sales number climbs and everything feels like momentum.
But revenue is not cash. In Q4, the gap between the two is where growing brands often feel the most pressure.
Think about what has to be paid for before a sale lands. Stock ordered weeks ago. Advertising running all day. Fulfilment and platform fees. Then returns that arrive later, against sales you have already counted. Marketplace payouts and customer payments also arrive on their own timetable, which is rarely the same as yours.
I have built and exited five businesses. I remember one business where sales were flying, everyone was delighted, and on paper we were having a cracking month. The only slight problem was that the money hadn't actually arrived in the bank. Suppliers, staff and everyone else still wanted paying, bizarrely enough!
It's a wonderful feeling watching your revenue grow, but I've yet to meet a bank manager who'll accept an impressive sales graph instead of actual cash.
One lesson I've never forgotten: turnover is lovely, profit is better, but cash keeps the lights on!
So before peak starts, I would ask three questions. How much cash do we need to get through the peak, not just to reach it? Which products deserve extra stock and advertising, and which simply look busy? And what does a good week look like in profit, not just in sales?
None of this needs a big finance team. It needs the numbers in one place, early enough to act on.
That is the thinking behind
Nudge. We help brands connect their sales, advertising, pricing and stock, so the next step is clearer before the pressure arrives.
Peak is a brilliant opportunity. It is worth knowing what you will keep from it.
Decode the why. Drive the buy.
