The Amazon Checks Worth Doing Before Black Friday

Black Friday is approaching, and if you’ve been selling on Amazon for a while, you’ll know that the next few weeks can make a big difference to your year.

Having run my own Amazon brands through several Black Fridays, I’ve learnt that throwing more money at advertising isn’t always the answer. It’s tempting to increase budgets, push bids and launch new campaigns. But there’s little point driving more traffic if the basics aren’t right.

Here’s the order I’d check things in.

1. Stock
Start with your bestsellers. Do you have enough to get through Black Friday and Cyber Monday? And is it actually available for customers to buy? It’s surprisingly easy to spend money advertising products that are about to run out.

2. The Buy Box
Are you consistently winning it? Check your pricing, availability and delivery times. If you’re not winning the Buy Box, your advertising may not even be eligible to run.

3. Listings
Are your images and content doing their job? Customers make decisions quickly, particularly during peak. Sometimes a small improvement to an already busy listing can make more difference than launching another campaign.

4. Advertising
Now look at where your budget is going. Focus on products with stock, healthy margins and a proven ability to convert. Black Friday isn’t the time to throw money at products that haven’t performed all year.

None of this is particularly exciting, but in my experience, it’s often the basics that make the biggest difference.
